About Allen Sports
Dick Allen (pictured left in 1972) started Allen Sports in his garage in 1967. Since its founding, the company has been committed to producing the highest-quality, easiest-to-use bike racks and bicycle related products on the market. Dick, a onetime aerospace engineer, opened Allen Sports after building a prototype bike carrier in his Lincoln, Massachusetts shop in his free time. The first ever trunk-mounted bicycle carrier made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding) was thoroughly tested on weekend excursions to Cape Cod. Shortly afterward, Allen took his design to market, and by 1971 had established a national presence for his product.
Today, the family owned company owns more than three dozen patents, operates four warehouses nationally, six factories abroad, and sells products in countries around the world including USA, Mexico, Canada, and China.

I have a bike hitch from Mr. Allen and its alright with some tweaks, so I was hesitant to buy this one for my compact car. I would also like to thank Mr. Allen, because just like the owner of Uniqlo, decided that people shouldn’t have to pay luxury prices for somewhat necessities of life. While I the previous comment might seem like this product feels cheaply made, I can tell you for one its not, and that your getting a really really fantastic deal for the price and carries not one but TWO BIKES! heck yeah. I was also dumbfounded when I first opened the box b/c I thought I received the wrong product. First off I drive a POS Yaris that’s scratched up so I can’t vouch if I saw anything different, meaning I didn’t see any new scratches, but definitely there are no dents.
Being that, there are so many factors that make or break it for me, but the most important to me is stability, meaning does is wobble a lot and I will say its very stable for me that is. Of course there’s going to be somewhat of shake or movement, but its not scary movement, like its very minor is what I’m saying. Also, I can’t vouch for other peoples car or how it was hooked up but I used the extra slack in the strap to tie parts of the bike body and also for insurance I used my bike lock to lock the bike to the rack. Just to get a better picture, I drove about an hour on the freeway and I was going about 75 mph, shhh don’t tell anybody.
I’m also not sure about other users, but installing this was not hard at all. Like even if you lost the instructions somewhat, I don’t see how you can mess this up. It also folds up to a really compact size so I can stick in my trunk so that nobody can steal my fantastic product.

This is a great rack that was really easy for me to install even during a hot day, after a long ride, while my head wasn’t all together there. A couple of tips:
1. They say to pull the bars so you can move the silver support bars into the holes. I found it way easier to put the rack on its side on the ground and push the bars in so you can move the silver bars into the holes.
2. You don’t need the optional crossbar to get a woman’s bike mounted. I’m short and ride a 16″ bike and it fits fine. You may have to do a little pedal positioning, but it beats buying another part you really don’t need.
3. DO NOT mount the women’s bike like they suggest: with one holder rotated to attach to the seat tube, under the top tube! Your bike will probably shift a bit in transit and mine shifted just enough to make it a completely useless method of securing the bike. It didn’t stay in the holder at all. I don’t care how tightly you strap it in, it will slide a bit- just enough to slide out of the configuration they suggest. Just mount the bike like you normally would- both holders under the top tube. It works fine and is more secure.
I didn’t find a need for bungee cords to secure the wheels because there’s so much extra strap that you can tie it through the wheels to keep them from rotating. This also works for 2 bikes as I usually have my husband’s bike on it as well. And we only use this on old cars whose paint I don’t really care about, but I see no problem with scratching even if you leave the hooks as-is. The key is to be good at tying down your straps tightly enough so that there isn’t extra vibration or so they don’t move. And yes, we put my husband’s carbon fiber bike on it to drive the 25 miles home. Crashing, torque, and single points of impact are really what you’re looking to avoid with carbon fiber. If it can support my husband, it can support itself the short distance home. Not sure I would drive it 500 miles on this rack, but to go home each day, it’s fine. This makes a great rack to throw in my mom’s car and keep there so she can meet up with us and then drive our sore, tired butts home after a long ride day. 😀

Excellent, but 1 caveat… This rack (Allen 102DN) is really well made- excellent strength, stability and materials. Very easy to mount on the trunk and the clips are easy to secure. The foam doesn’t scratch the car paint. For my old 10 speed (men’s) bike that has a horizontal top tube, it’s really perfect. I also like the tie-downs that my bike’s top tube sits on with the strap fasteners- they’re extremely secure. (I also use bungee cords to fasten the bike to the car bumper to keep it even more secure.) Excellent price too.
One caveat- the rack is narrow, so it works great for my bike. But my S.O’s (women’s) bike has a slanted (not horizontal) top tube and her bike is longer (like some mountain bikes too), so when you hang it on this rack, the rear wheel sticks way up because it isn’t wide enough to support it over by the seat. This is nothing against this rack- I should’ve done my homework better beforehand & gotten a wider rack to accommodate these concerns better. And I would get it from Allen because I’m so impressed with their quality & value.

I was hesitant about using a trunk rack but had no option as my car can’t use roof racks. I bought the double bike rack and use it to haul mountain bikes with friends or for solo rides.
I took the advice of other reviews and wrapped the hooks with electrical tape to prevent scratches and give it a little more grip. If you tighten it down in the pattern the directions tell you too, this rack is very secure.
I also recommend getting a bungee or strap to secure the bike to the bottom bracket of the rack. When I first used the rack with only the 2 upper mounting points the bike would rotate on those points and lift the tires from the air coming around the car. Once I had it strapped to prevent any lift it was solid, and I can drive 70mph-80mph on the freeway with no issues.

The Allen Sport’s website says this model does not fit the Corolla S because of the clearance of the rack onto the trunk over the spoiler. I decided to give it a shot anyway as the price was so cheap. Here is my finding..
First, the rack has a warning about the two metal hooks you have to set into place during assembly being a pinch point. Do not ignore this. I wore a glove when setting them and had no issues but I can definitely see how someone could get hurt. Assembly was simple, basically that was the only step.
Second, if you set the bottom pads of the rack against your license plate and the top on the trunk, it clears the spoiler fine. The metal hooks mentioned earlier do rest against the spoiler and can easily cause scratches. I used a piece of foam to separate and it worked out fine.
Third, many reviews mention the hooks that attach to the sides of the trunk scratching the paint. I used a piece of foam with an adhesive side under each hook to keep it off the paint, no issues.
Fourth, an extra bungee comes in handy to keep loose bits like the front tire from moving around too much. Get creative.
Overall, I’m happy with the purchase. The rack is being used for one bike but I don’t think a second one would cause an issue with this set up. Again, great price to not at least give it a shot. Glad I did.

I just came back from a 1200 mile road trip where I used the rack on a 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback for the first time. It works great! I drove freeways, good and bad county roads, even a stretch of washboard dirt road to a trail head and the rack performed rock solid. You do have to keep those straps tight although after an initial re-tightening after that washboard trail it did not stretch at all for the rest of the trip. But do cover the metal hooks before you install it!!! You WILL damage your paint if you install them naked as they are. I used window weather stripping and duct tape to “cushion” them.

A lot of the negative reviews on here say that their strap failed on the highway and/ or on long trips. Never trust the straps, they are only made to keep the bikes from sliding around on the rack. ALWAYS bungee your bikes to the rack AND to themselves if you have more than one. Bungee cords are cheap. Bikes are expensive. Do the math.

I like this trunk mount, i does the job if you install it CORRECTLY
Pros:
– It fits most sedans or hatchback cars
– It holds two adult bikes no problem
– Looks and feels well made
– Straps are solid
– Pads are good enough to keep it from scratching your trunk or glass if you have a hatchback
– Installs in minutes
Cons:
– None so far
Overall i really like this trunk mount, i drove 36 miles at about 70 MPH and the unit felt solid with two adult bikes in the back.
Before you head out MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL the mount correctly to avoid any accidents!!!!!
What i did is I`ve added few weatherstrip seal to each hook to keep it from scratching the paint on my car, but once you apply pressure the seal comes off easily so i decided to change the location of the hooks and set it up INSIDE my trunk (Please look at the pictures to see where i install them) it works WAY BETTER and also is more secure and doesn`t scratch your trunk.
I also added a bungee cord once the bikes are hold in place just in case Murphy’s law 🙂

There are a ton of poor reviews for this product…I tried something I think a lot of these people didn’t do to have amazing results while using this bike rack.
It sounds crazy but I read the directions. I know right? Weird. I read the directions and recommendations and this rack didn’t break my rear window, this rack didn’t scratch my car, it didn’t fall off while driving…it just worked. And worked well. I hope this review helps others. This rack is awesome!!
